Boise State’s football program appears to have secured a promising prospect for its quarterback position.
Yeah, that’s the understatement of the year.
In a move that dropped the mouths of college football fans & pundits across the country, USC’s blue diamond quarterback recruit from 2023, Malachi Nelson, declared on Twitter his decision to transfer to Boise State, bringing with him four years of remaining eligibility.
Honestly, when I read this headline, all I could picture was that scene from Blue Chips where some random white guy rolls up on star basketball prospect Ricky Roe with a “You Ricky?”, and then after verifying, casually slides Roe a bag full of cash.
I mean, come on!
But to be fair, in this NIL/Transfer Portal “Wild West” era of college football that we live in, it is completely legal to throw piles of cash at a recruit.
I’ve said this more than once, that if I were a billionaire (or even a hundred millionaire), I would “invest” my money in human futures aka buy up the top talent around the country, build a superteam, and take a cut from the media rights and other program revenue streams. More o
I can’t reasonably believe I’m the first brilliant mind to skeem this. And there is absolutely NO WAY IN HELL that the top quarterback recruit from a year ago, slated to play for a coach who’s 3 for 4 with his quarterbacks winning a Heisman, heading one of college football’s most storied programs, in his home state, decides:
“Ya know what, I’ve always wanted to see what being ‘cold to the bones’ feels like while trying to win a Mountain West Conference Championship instead of a legit Power 5 conference title, with a snowball’s chance of making it into the College Football Playoffs (CFP), with the coach who replaced the fired head coach, mid-season. That actually sounds great; not only for pleasure purposes, but for my professional future. Boise St. is an absolute quarterback factory with a well-established pipeline to the NFL. Plus, THE WOMEN. The women of Potato Country…”
Give me a break.
Nelson recently visited Boise and evidently found the program to his liking. Especially when he visited his presumed flat and found three white co-eds covered in $4 million in crisp $100 bills, laying on a bed wearing only his jersey and panties with his number on the front and name on the back. His visit to Boise State was his first since he made his intention to transfer public, but it’s now clear it won’t be his last.
Nelson is one of two new additions to the Broncos this week, with the team also welcoming former Cal cornerback Jeremiah Earby.
A standout athlete from Los Alamitos High School in California, Nelson was a five-star recruit entering 2023 National Signing Day. He ranked as the No. 5 quarterback and No. 13 overall recruit in the 2023 class, according to 247Sports, and was rated as the top recruit in the country by ESPN (of course). He received offers from several elite college football programs, including Michigan, Alabama, USC, Oklahoma, Georgia, Ohio State, and Oregon.
In his high school career at Los Alamitos, Nelson achieved an impressive 7,984 passing yards and a total of 110 touchdowns, including 105 passing touchdowns. His exceptional performance earned him the title of Gatorade California Player of the Year in both 2021 and 2022.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 190 pounds, Nelson joins a crowded Boise State quarterback room that is in-flux. The team’s previous starting quarterback, Taylen Green, transferred to Arkansas. Green was replaced by Maddux Madsen before a home game against New Mexico last season, but Madsen later suffered a knee injury that might delay his return until fall camp in August.
Boise State’s current quarterback roster includes redshirt freshman CJ Tiller, redshirt junior Colt Fulton, freshman Kaleb Annett, and redshirt freshman Max Cutforth. Tiller, who started the Louisiana Bowl, didn’t quite ball in a loss to UCLA, completing only 12-of-21 passes for 117 yards with an interception.
Nelson’s arrival to Idaho changes everything; the program’s trajectory, the trajectory for the assistant coach who recruited him, the money that will pile up for the program……everything. His talent will be a significant boost for an offense that also anticipates the return of Mountain West OPY, running back Ashton Jeanty, alongside promising young tailback Jambres Dubar. Nelson will also have a talented pool of wide receivers to work with this offseason in Latrell Caples, Austin Bolt, and Prince Strachan.
Well done, Boise St. I only wish Arizona St. had thought of it first.
