Freshman Bats Lead FAU Past Miami

FAU Owls 6 – Miami Hurricanes 4

FAU welcomed long-time in-state opponent Miami into Boca Raton Tuesday night. The Owls looked to take the first of four games that these two will play across the course of the season, and use that momentum going into a weekend series against Maine.

The Owls would jump in front early in the first, with Emilio Gonzalez recording an RBI single, scoring Brando Leroux to make it a 1-0 game. Patrick Ward would add another run in the second with an RBI single, scoring Dylan LaPointe. 

The Owls would add another run in the third, with a home run from freshman Dylan LaPointe, his second of the year. Emilio Gonzalez would follow it up with another RBI single, this time scoring Jalen DeBose. 

John Schroeder continues his success at the plate from the FIU series, going 2-3 with an RBI triple in the sixth. While Schroeder continues to pull through for the Owls offense, it was the freshman bats that paved the way for the Owls success in Tuesday night’s game. Gonzalez and LaPointe combined for four of the six RBIs in the game. 

The Owls bullpen put together a great outing to back up Zach Abbey after he went 3.0 innings pitched, allowing five hits and three earned runs. Danny Trehey continues his dominance out of the bullpen, pitching 2.2 innings while giving up no runs and only two hits. Trehey’s performance was yet again, crucial for the Owls to maintain their lead. Braden Ostrander continued to improve as he went out and tossed 1.1 innings pitched, giving up no runs and no hits. 

The Owls were out-hit in the game nine to eight, but still managed to score two more runs than Miami and come away with the first win of the season-long series. The Owls obtained their second win over a power five program, and have now scored at least five runs against Miami in five straight games playing them. 

The bats seem to be staying hot for FAU following their blowout win against FIU on Sunday. They’ll have the rest of this week to prepare for a three game series against Maine this weekend. A series sweep will improve the Owls record to 12-6.
