Series Recap: Charlotte vs FAU

FAU welcomed the Charlotte 49ers into Boca Raton for their first series in AAC conference play. The Owls entered the series with their five game winning streak getting snapped by UCF, and looked to get back in the win column and improve their 12-7 record. The Owls pushed through inclement weather to sweep the Saturday doubleheader, and take the series two games to one.

Heavy rain postponed the start of the series Friday, and rescheduled game one for Saturday for a doubleheader. C.J. Williams got the start for the Owls in game one of the doubleheader. Williams put together yet another solid start for the Owls, pitching 5.1 innings, giving up four hits, and two runs while striking out five.

The Owls bullpen proved itself once again to be extremely reliable in game one. Steven Andrews came in for relief, and recorded 2.2 innings pitched, while giving up two hits, and one run. Andrews would end up recording the win in game one, while Danny Trehey would come in and pick up the save.

The Owls would take game one of the doubleheader 4-3, with Patrick Ward recording two hits and two RBIs, one being a home run to take the lead in the eighth. They looked to sweep the doubleheader and take the series.

Tyler Murphy would get the start for game two, and look to help propel the Owls to their first AAC conference series win. Murphy didn’t have his very best stuff but it wasn’t an issue for FAU. Murphy, despite giving up four runs, two of which being earned runs, still went 6.0 innings and only gave up three hits, while striking out six.

Sam Drumheller, Danny Trehey, and Max Martzolf would combine for the remaining three innings of the game, while only giving up one run collectively. While the pitching staff gave up five runs, the Owls offense scraped together enough runs to come away with a 6-5 win.

While the Owls swept the doubleheader Saturday and took the series, Charlotte came out on Sunday with a chip on their shoulder to take game three. The 49ers’s bats would come alive late in the game to put up 13 runs opposed to the Owls one, and leave Boca Raton without getting swept.

FAU concluded the series against Charlotte with a 14-8 record. Their next game will be against Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday at 6:30 PM, at FAU Baseball Stadium.
