Union transfer F Julian Carranza to Dutch club Feyenoord

The long-anticipated transfer of Philadelphia Union star forward Julian Carranza to top-tier Dutch club Feyenoord became official Sunday.

The transfer fee wasn’t immediately available.

Carranza, 24, recorded 34 goals and 15 assists in 74 matches (67 starts) over the past 2 1/2 seasons for the Union. His contract with Philadelphia was set to expire after this season.

“Julian has accomplished a great amount in his time with the Union,” Philadelphia sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a news release. “We initially brought him in after seeing his potential to fit our aggressive style of play and were pleased at how quickly he developed and adapted.

“He has been an integral part of our success, and we are grateful for all he has contributed both on and off the field, but this is the right move for the player as he continues his development and the best move for the club as we look to make adjustments heading towards the summer transfer window.”

Carranza began his MLS career with Inter Miami and had three goals in 41 matches (11 starts) over two seasons (2020-21).

Philadelphia acquired Carranza on loan from Miami in 2021 for a second-round pick in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft. The club permanently acquired Carranza in July 2022 for $500,000 in General Allocation Money.

Carranza scored 14 goals in each of his first two seasons with the Union. This season, he has six goals in 12 matches (11 starts) but hasn’t played since May 25 due to an ankle injury.

The Union (4-8-8, 20 points) fell 4-2 at Montreal CF on Saturday night. It was the club’s fourth straight setback and stretched their winless streak to seven (0-4-3).
