Toronto FC standout forward Lorenzo Insigne will be sidelined up to six weeks due to a right hamstring injury sustained last weekend against Atlanta United.
Toronto FC coach John Herdman confirmed the length of Insigne’s expected absence Friday. The club hosts Sporting Kansas City on Saturday.
Herdman said an MRI exam revealed the severity of the injury. He said doctors from Canada, England and Insigne’s native Italy studied the MRI results.
“It’s one of those tricky ones, a little bit close to the head of the muscle,” Herdman said. “When it’s at that head, you’ve got to get a few opinions on it.”
Insigne, 32, sustained the injury during first-half stoppage time of last Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Atlanta.
The 5-foot-4 Insigne has two goals in five matches this season. He has 12 goals and seven assists in 36 matches over parts of three seasons with Toronto.
Insigne was a member of Italy’s World Cup team in 2014. He played 11 seasons Italian club Napoli through 2021-22.
