Evander scored on a free kick from 25 yards out in the ninth minute of second-half stoppage time as the 10-man Portland Timbers rallied for a 4-4 draw with visiting St. Louis City SC on Saturday night.
Felipe Mora had two goals and an assist, Jonathan Rodriguez also scored and Evander had a pair of assists for the Timbers (10-9-7, 37 points), who trailed 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2. Mora received a red card early in second-half stoppage time for a dangerous foul, leaving Portland short-handed the rest of the way.
Cedric Teuchert had a goal and an assist and Simon Becher, Eduard Lowen and Nokkvi Thorisson also tallied for St. Louis (4-10-12, 24 points), which remained the lone MLS team winless on the road this season (0-6-7). Marcel Hartel added a pair of assists and goalkeeper Roman Burki made seven saves.
Evander’s tying goal sailed over a wall of St. Louis defenders and dipped just inside the left post.
St. Louis opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Hartel’s corner kick from the left wing found Becher about five yards out from the near post and he nodded a header past goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, who had three saves.
In the 36th minute, Becher was upended by defender Miguel Araujo while attempting a shot in the 18-yard box and Lowen hammered the ensuing penalty kick into the upper left corner of the net to make it 2-0.
The Timbers responded just three minutes later. Evander dribbled the ball down the middle of the field before sending a pass to Mora on the right wing. Mora’s cross found Rodriguez for a tap-in at the far post.
St. Louis struck again in first-half stoppage time. Hartel’s corner from the left wing went to Teuchert at the top of the 18-yard box and his volley found its way through a maze of players and into the net.
The Timbers pulled within 3-2 in the 57th minute as Claudio Bravo’s cross from the left wing found Evander outside the left post. Evander headed the ball back to the middle of the field and Mora put a header into the net from three yards out.
St. Louis restored its two-goal advantage a minute later as Teuchert fed Thorisson near the top right corner of the penalty area. Thorisson cut back toward the middle of the field and curled a left-footed shot from 15 yards just inside the far post.
Portland responded again in the 64th minute as Burki mishandled Evander’s shot from 20 yards out and Mora was there to poke the rebound past the prone goalie.
