Gary Smith, the only Nashville SC head coach since the club joined MLS in 2020, was fired on Thursday.
The team currently sits in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with just three wins through 12 matches, including a 2-0 home victory against Toronto FC on Wednesday night.
Smith, 55, guided Nashville to the MLS Cup Playoffs in each of his first four seasons, plus a runner-up finish in the Leagues Cup in 2023.
Nashville promoted Rumba Munthali from player development coach to interim head coach. The team also parted ways with assistant coach Steve Guppy.
Smith coached Nashville for two seasons (2018-19) in the USL Championship before the club transitioned to MLS in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.
Smith coached the Colorado Rapids from 2008-11, leading them to the MLS Cup title in 2010. He also managed Stevenage in his native England from 2012-13 and the Atlanta Silverbacks of the North American Soccer League in 2015.
