In the last few weeks, NFL teams have been going hard and heavy on the lack of performance on offense and defense. In fact, you can look at the last two weeks and see it in full bloom. Today was no different as another coordinator got his walking papers due to lack of execution when it matters.
Due to the struggles they have been having, including the ones from their 13-10 loss on Sunday to the Browns, the Pittsburgh Steelers decided that a changing of the guard is not only warranted but necessary if they want any shot at laying claim to the AFC North this season. With that said, and no surprise to anyone, they fired offensive coordinator Matt Canada.
If you are trying to tweak your flux capacitor, you would have to go back to 1941 to the last time Pittsburgh made any personnel changes in the middle of the season.
The most recent loss on Sunday also led to a massive rant from Steelers running back Najee Harris asking the most obvious question: ‘How long is this s— going to last?’ In a way, he does have a point. You can look at the Steelers results from the past month and come to the realization that they should have lost some of those games.
Let’s keep in mind that Kenny Pickett has the same number of passing touchdowns as Anthony Richardson since the start of October (Just FYI, Richardson has been on IR since the beginning of October). The offense is having struggles, but the defense is having its fair share too. If the Steelers are going to rely on just TJ Watt to get them to the finish line, they’re screwed.
But Canada’s firing is no surprise versus the most WTF one so far…
While the offense looked good on Sunday, many were wondering how did Ken Dorsey get punished for the defense’s stupidity during the final stretch of their Monday night loss to Denver last week. Yes, the offense looked bad, and Josh Allen looked more like Jay Cutler mixed with Jameis Winston and a pinch of Jared Goff (circa 2018) and Nathan Peterman, but why was Dorsey the only one held to account for Buffalo’s mediocre performance?
In any event, Canada’s tenure with the Steelers ends after a season and a half. Will this help the Steelers turn the tide with Cleveland looking unstoppable, and Baltimore looking unbeatable in the AFC North? What are your thoughts? Should this decision have happened sooner?
