Spencer Rattler Turning Heads At Saints Camp

Rattler

The New Orleans Saints have been holding a quarterback competition to see who can emerge as their backup behind Derek Carr. Of course, this battle was going to be between last year’s draft pick Jake Haener, and this year’s draft pick Spencer Rattler. Rattler is the one that has fans excited due to his potential.

Not long ago, Rattler was being talked about as a potential number-one overall draft pick in the NFL. He wound up falling multiple rounds later to the Saints. Anybody that had the number one overall pick upside at some point would be fun to root for, considering that he could still reach that ceiling set for him. However, he will have to work hard for this backup job if he has any hope of achieving his goals. If the word out of training camp has been any indication, it’s that Rattler has done an excellent job so far.

Over the weekend, many reporters who attended Saints practice listed Rattler as the standout, claiming that he was having some of the best practices of his young NFL career already. There was nothing but solid highlights from a few days for Rattler, and it fuels the fire even more that he could be the potential franchise quarterback down in New Orleans.

Chris Olave Praised Spencer Rattler

It’s not just the reporters who’ve liked what they’ve seen from the rookie signal caller. Star receiver Chris Olave talked about Rattler glowingly after practice. He said, “He’s really talented. Rattler’s arm talent is off the charts”. Now, Olave didn’t openly endorse him to be the team’s future starter or say that he’s winning the quarterback battle for the backup job. What he DID say is that Rattler still has work to do. Stating, “I want to see him in action, but from my first impression, he’s going to be a really good player.”

There is no telling what type of offense the Saints could be looking at in the future. They’re already bringing in a new offensive coordinator who might FINALLY open things up for them. Perhaps it could make Derek Carr look significantly better. The team also has to try and retain Alvin Kamara, and they recently lost Michael Thomas. The offense down in New Orleans needs some consistency and confidence, which are two things that Rattler might bring down the line when given the chance. For now, it’s mostly a pipe dream that he can be the future franchise quarterback, but we’ve seen far more unlikely stories play out in the NFL over the years already.
