The New Orleans Saints and Michael Thomas appeared to have a bit of a falling out last season. It appeared as if there was a lot going on behind the scenes, and fans were, quite frankly, tired of Thomas not being able to stay healthy (though that isn’t any fault of his own). Regardless, it led to Thomas leaving in free agency and testing his options.
Michael Thomas Was Never Signed…
After the offseason came to a pass, it was noticed that Thomas still hadn’t landed with a new team, not even someone like the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a little surprising considering his talent when healthy, yet nothing materialized. Then, as the season was just about to begin, the NFL announced that he was being suspended for the season opener, even though he wasn’t on an NFL team, for an incident that happened in 2023 with a construction worker. That suspension has now passed, and Thomas is free to lock in with another team again, the question is who?
Thomas Could Be Eyeing The Saints Again?
Well, after the Saints’ dominating performance over the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, it had to have caught the eye of Thomas. Shortly after the game ended, safety Tyrann Mathieu retweeted a couple of posts including one that featured a Saints fan (a father and son) sporting Mathieu and Michael Thomas jerseys to the game. Thomas eventually saw it and retweeted it himself, leading Saints fans all over the place to wonder if he’s still interested in a return. All of the comments underneath Thomas’ retweet were hoping that he could smooth out his differences with the organization and return to the field again.
A Reunion Would Be Fun To Watch
It wouldn’t be fun watching Thomas play on another team, he was one of those players that I thought would retire as a Saint during the prime years. Unfortunately, not everything is predictable, and the breakup still feels incomplete for some reason, probably because he hasn’t signed with a new team. If and that’s a big if, Thomas is willing to return to New Orleans, it would greatly help this team out.
We already saw how big of a difference Klint Kubiak was as the new offensive play-caller in Week 1. Imagine a healthy Thomas out there creating even more separation, with designed plays suited to his strengths. It could make this potentially exciting offense that much more fun to watch. Plus, it should be noted that the Saints do NOT have much depth at their wideout position. Past Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, the receiving core gets things with Cedrick Wilson and A.T. Perry behind them. Thomas would immediately slot back in and could start rather soon given his knowledge of the franchise overall.
I would love to see Thomas return and try to finish out his career here, where it all began. I wouldn’t want to watch him play on a different contender, it would just feel wrong with him in different colors. Either way, I do hope the best for him and believe he’ll find a new spot before this season comes to a close. This surely can’t be the end of his career.
