Kansas City Chiefs Extend Steve Spagnuolo Following Super Bowl Win

By CJ Carlson

The Kansas City Chiefs won another Super Bowl this past week, and their defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo, was an integral part in that. He’s been with the organization for years now and has consistently locked down opposing offenses. Well, it appears that he’s been rewarded for his work with the team.

Spagnuolo was just announced to have signed a contract extension to stay in Kansas City. After winning this past Super Bowl, he is now the only coordinator in league history to win four Super Bowls. This past season, he was able to help the Chiefs defense rank second in points and yards allowed while simultaneously catapulting them through vaunted playoff matchups. They forced the Buffalo Bills to run the football more than they would like, they made the Baltimore Ravens turn into a pass-happy team and pushed the San Francisco 49ers to play away from their stars. And this was just in the course of their postseason run.

Why Has Steve Spagnuolo Not Received Head Coaching Interest

One question that’s popped up a lot lately is why Spagnuolo hasn’t been given head coaching attention. Well, he has, and was a head coach in the past, but he simply doesn’t want too anymore. He’s perfectly happy with being on a great team and winning more Super Bowls, so there’s no desire to go do something else. When he was the Rams head coach back in 2009 all the way to 2011, things didn’t go so well. He was also an interim coach in 2017 for the New York Giants after Ben McAdoo was fired. Throughout his head coaching tenure, he’s compiled a career record of 11-41.

Many strongly feel like other teams in the league should be giving him an opportunity to be a head coach in the NFL again. However, he genuinely just might be declining any offers presented to him, and we just won’t know about it. One thing is for sure though, nothing is going to change in 2024. Spagnuolo will remain with the Chiefs for at least next season, and once again keep this defense intact to try and win a fourth Super Bowl in six years.
