Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is no doubt one of the best at his position in the whole league. Lamb was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft 17th overall. Since joining the NFL, he very quickly established himself as one of the league’s promising young receivers. Known for his strong hands, shifty route running, and ridiculous playmaking skills out of the slot primarily, Lamb has become the rock of the Cowboys offense, practically being the only player on the field that can bring life to a team lacking any other key playmakers. Lamb’s contract with Dallas is about to expire though and he is looking to break the bank in order to stay a Cowboy for the long term.
Reportedly, the Dallas Cowboys are closing in on a contract very soon with their premier wide receiver. According to the report, the deal will be worth between 136 and 138 million dollars over the span of 4 years. The source however is somewhat of a question mark to many people, coming from none other than “PrettyRickey213” on X (twitter). Rickey is still very new on the scene as a reporter, however he has proven to many to be consistently on the money in his reports, especially as it pertains to contract extensions. Earlier in the offseason he was the first to report about Trevor Lawrence becoming the highest paid quarterback in NFL history and he reported that the Lions would bring out the bank to re-sign both wide receiver Amon Ra St. Brown as well as offensive tackle Penei Sewell. Most recently Rickey was very quick on the jump to report the new contracts for Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love, stating that Tua’s contract would be less than Jarred Goff’s and Love’s would be the most in the NFL. Every single one of these reports became true. So, take Rickey’s CeeDee Lamb report with a grain of salt and decide for yourself if you believe it or not, however I personally do believe in Rickey and that it will prove to be legitimate soon enough.
Now that the questions of the report itself are out of the way, let us discuss the supposed contract itself. CeeDee Lamb wants to be at minimum the second highest paid wide receiver in the National Football League, that is without question. Lamb is only 25 years old and has proven to be a do it all playmaker who can shake defenders, find himself open every snap, and consistently make the tough grabs no matter the situation. Lamb was 2nd in the league in receiving yards last season with 1,749, only 50 yards exactly short of Tyreek Hill. Lamb also was 3rd in the league in receiving touchdowns with 12, Tyreek Hill and Mike Evans were tied for 1st at 13. Lamb didn’t have some out of nowhere breakout season, he’s shown steady development year after year, being 6th in receiving yards as well as 6th in touchdowns in 2022 as well. So Dallas should not hesitate during these contract negotiations as there is not a single doubt that 88 is worth being paid as the 2nd best receiver, or whatever amount of money he asks for. Around 138 million over 4 years sounds just about perfect value for the superstar of America’s Team’s offense. This contract would have him making 34.5 million dollars a season. That is just behind Justin Jefferson’s contract at 35 million per year, and a decent bit ahead of A.J. Brown’s contract which pays him 32 million a season, which is currently the 2nd most in the league..
It is clear that the Dallas Cowboys are desperate to strike a deal with the center of their offense as the rest of their entire wide receiver room only produced 1,116 yards receiving combined, a full 633 yards less than CeeDee Lamb’s one man army. CeeDee himself is currently sitting out of the Cowboys’ mandatory training camp as he waits for a contract extension. If you are a Dallas Cowboys fan, you better hope that Rickey’s report is legit, because Dallas will be going through some very dire straits if the deal can’t get done. If contract negotiations start to fall through and Lamb gets upset, we will no longer be discussing Lamb’s extension, we will be discussing his top landing spots. With that being said, if you aren’t a Cowboys fan, maybe you should hope the Cowboys remain as cheap as they were this past free agency while discussing Lamb’s deal.
The supposed deal with Lamb will prove to be an extremely pivotal moment in the Cowboys’ timeline no matter the result. If the Cowboys land a deal with CeeDee Lamb then their path is pretty straight forward, they will get a deal done with Dak Prescott as soon as possible and continue as a playoff contender. If contract talks fall short however, then the Cowboys might have no choice than to change the path they continue. If 88 leaves, Dak would likely be on his way out alongside Lamb, acknowledging that he has no help on offense whatsoever anymore. Zach Martin, the all time great 33 year old guard, seeing no chance of contending following the absence of Dak and Lamb would likely retire. As far as I see it, there’s a very realistic butterfly effect that would leave the Dallas Cowboys offense in shambles and a front office with no other choice than to rebuild following these crucial losses. This rebuild would be a complete makeover, to the extent that it may even lead to a trade involving defensive player of the year candidate, Micah Parsons who is an unrestricted free agent come 2026. If you were a player of Micah’s caliber would you, given the choice, stick around for such an in depth rebuild? In today’s league, all of the power when it comes to contracts and free agency are in the players hands, not the teams. One slip up with a fan favorite receiver very well may lead to multiple years of travesty for a franchise and many more heart striking losses. It’s up to Jerry Jones and his staff to do the right thing and pay 88.
