Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Mazi Smith will miss the team’s preseason game at the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday because of an allergic reaction, the team announced.
Smith did not travel with the team when it left Friday from training camp in Oxnard, Calif. The Cowboys left open the possibility of Smith later joining the team before ruling him out after re-evaluating his medical issue on Saturday.
Listed as the starting nose tackle, Smith was the 26th overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Michigan. He struggled during his rookie season with the Cowboys, starting three of 17 regular-season games and totaling 13 tackles, three quarterback hits and one sack. Smith played on 28 percent of defensive snaps.
Smith, 23, had three tackles in the preseason opener, a 13-12 loss at the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday.
The Cowboys play the Raiders on Saturday, then host the Los Angeles Chargers on Aug. 24 before opening the regular season Sept. 8 at the Cleveland Browns.
