According to several sources, defensive end Charles Omenihu suffered an ACL injury during the AFC Championship Game last Sunday, which will prevent him from participating in Super Bowl LVIII against his previous team, the San Francisco 49ers.

Omenihu seemed to acknowledge the unfortunate situation with a broken heart emoji posted on his social media account.

Omenihu Had A Breakout Year After Suspension, Was A Fan-Favorite

Yes, this is the same Charles Omenihu who gifted free Peacock subscriptions to Chiefs fans after their game was the only Wild Card Weekend game needing a separate paid subscription to the streaming platform to view the Chiefs/Dolphins game. Many fans were outraged that the NFL would try and cash in on “Taylor-mania”, but Omenihu was the one Chief who came up with a solution to the problem.

This season, which was his first with the Chiefs, Omenihu recorded a personal best of seven sacks, even after being sidelined for the first six games due to an NFL suspension. His performance included a notable strip-sack on Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson in the AFgame preceding his injury.

The Chiefs had already faced the Ravens without their key defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, who was put on injured reserve ahead of the game because of a triceps injury, and like Omenihu, Nnadi will be absent for the Super Bowl.

At 26, Omenihu’s career in the NFL, prior to joining the Chiefs, was divided between the Houston Texans and the 49ers, during which he accumulated 11.5 sacks, with 4.5 of those coming in the 2022 season with the 49ers.

Bleacher Report (no relation) was the first to disclose the specifics of Omenihu’s injury.
