I can’t believe I’m reporting this, but yes, Van Wilder is alive and well, posing as a student athlete for the University of Miami Hurricanes. Cam McCormick, the tight end for the University of Miami Hurricanes, has announced his decision to return for his ninth season of college football, and I’m so effin’ jealous, I’m in physical pain.
This decision, which he dramatically referred to as his “last ride” in a social media post, sets a new record for college football eligibility.

How in the hell did this kid pull off the greatest attempt at a Van Wilder in human history? Here’s everything we know:
McCormick’s collegiate journey began at the University of Oregon in 2016. However, his career there was marred by a series of season-ending injuries, sidelining him for significant portions of the 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 seasons. His request for a ninth season of eligibility was granted by the ACC, as reported by ESPN.
Standing at 6-foot-5, McCormick played in all 13 games for the Hurricanes last season, making eight starts. He was coached by Mario Cristobal, whom he had previously played for at Oregon. During this period, McCormick made eight receptions for a total of 62 yards.
Regarding McCormick’s background and eligibility:
Age: As of now, Cam McCormick is 25 years old, and he is set to turn 26 in April.
Eligibility Details: McCormick’s extended eligibility stems from numerous injuries that prevented him from playing for four consecutive seasons. He redshirted in 2016 and played as a reserve in 2017.
A broken left ankle in 2018, followed by complications from this injury, kept him off the field for the 2018, 2019, and 2020 seasons.
A torn right Achilles tendon in 2021 further extended his absence. He applied and was granted eighth and ninth years of eligibility by the NCAA.
Injury History: McCormick’s college career has been plagued by injuries. He redshirted in 2016 due to rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition resulting from a demanding offseason workout.
In 2018, he suffered a broken ankle, leading to multiple surgeries and prolonged recovery (2019, 2020).
His 2021 season was cut short by an Achilles tendon tear.

High School Class: McCormick was part of the same high school recruiting class as NFL notables such as Oregon teammate Justin Herbert (Chargers), Rashan Gary (Packers), Ed Oliver (Bills), and Nick Bosa (49ers).
