Iowa offensive lineman Cade Borud was given a one-game suspension after being arrested for operating while intoxicated (OWI) in July.
Borud, a sophomore, will also serve on the scout team for the opening week of the season and perform community service that Friday and Saturday while he misses the season opener against FCS Illinois State, Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz told reporters Saturday.
“It’s unfortunate any time a player makes a bad decision. He’s remorseful about it,” Ferentz said after the Hawkeyes had an open practice, adding that “it’s going to be double jeopardy moving forward.”
Borud transferred to Iowa as a walk-on after starting 12 games at center for FCS North Dakota in 2023. He is listed at 6-foot-2 and 303 pounds.
Borud was arrested early on the morning of July 27 and was cited for allegedly driving on the wrong side of a two-way highway. The police report said he consented to a sobriety test and registered a BAC of 0.177 percent, more than twice the legal limit.
