Shohei Ohtani drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out double in the ninth inning and the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Detroit Tigers, 4-3, on Friday night.
Freddie Freeman had a solo homer as Los Angeles snapped a four-game losing streak. Michael Petersen (3-0) picked up the victory in relief and Daniel Hudson notched his fourth save.
Riley Greene drove in two runs for the Tigers, who had won two straight entering Friday.
Detroit starter Tarik Skubal allowed two runs and two hits with eight strikeouts in six innings. James Paxton gave up three runs and five hits while walking four over 3 2/3 frames for the Dodgers.
Tied 3-3 in the top of the ninth, Chris Taylor singled with one out. Tyler Holton replaced Jason Foley (2-3) and gave up a pinch-hit single to Austin Barnes. After a popout, Ohtani smashed a ground-rule double to center to score Taylor.
In the bottom of the inning, Hudson issued one-out walks to Colt Keith and Wenceel Perez, then recovered to fan Matt Vierling and retire Greene on a flyout.
The Tigers finished 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Detroit took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Justyn-Henry Malloy singled with one out and Vierling drew a walk. Greene then ripped a double to center, bringing home both runners.
The Tigers tallied another run in the second after Skubal struck out the side in the top of the frame.
Ryan Vilade, just called up from Triple-A Toledo, drew a one-out walk before Malloy knocked him in with a two-out triple to right.
Los Angeles didn’t have a hit until Freeman blasted his 14th homer with one out in the fourth. Teoscar Hernandez then drew a walk, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Andy Pages’ single.
Paxton was removed after Vilade singled and Malloy drew a two-out walk in the fourth. Yohan Ramirez came in and struck out Vierling.
The Dodgers left a runner on third in the seventh inning when Will Vest struck out Miguel Vargas.
Will Smith and Freeman had two-out hits in the eighth against Beau Brieske. Foley entered in relief and gave up a tying single to Hernandez.
