The Kansas City Royals placed outfielder Hunter Renfroe on the 10-day injured list and infielder Adam Frazier on the bereavement list prior to Tuesday’s home game against the New York Yankees.
Renfroe fractured the big toe on his left foot during Monday’s 4-2 loss against the Yankees. He fouled two pitches off the foot during a 12-pitch at-bat in the third inning against New York left-hander Carlos Rodon.
Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said Renfroe is getting further imaging done before the club settles on a timetable for his return.
“We’re getting one more exam on him (Tuesday) to see if we can clarify exactly what’s wrong and how long it’s going to be,” Quatraro said. “He’s in pain, but we’re hopeful that the further testing gives us a better insight into what it is.”
Renfroe, 32, feels the fracture occurred during the first of the two foul balls. He eventually struck out and was replaced before the top of the fifth inning.
The injury comes at a bad time, as Renfroe had found a groove at the plate. Prior to Monday’s abbreviated night, Renfroe had a hit in nine straight games and was 12-for-32 (.375) with two homers and seven RBIs during that span.
“It’s pretty aggravating,” Renfroe said before Tuesday’s game. “It always seems to happen, for any player really, once you start going good, you start moving around a lot, get on base a lot, all of a sudden, something happens. You pull something, you get hurt, a freak accident happens. It’s one of those things in baseball where it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but it’s part of it.”
The recent tear allowed Renfroe to increase his average to .200. He has six homers and 26 RBIs in 56 games.
Frazier, 32, is batting .225 with two homers and 10 RBIs across 50 games.
Kansas City recalled outfielder Drew Waters and infielder Nick Pratto from Triple-A Omaha in corresponding moves.
Waters, 25, is batting .277 with seven homers and 33 RBIs in 50 games at Omaha. In 130 games with the Royals over the past two seasons, he hit .231 with 13 home runs and 50 RBIs.
Pratto, 25, has a .234 average with seven homers and 30 RBIs in 53 games at Omaha. He has a .216 average with 14 homers and 55 RBIs in 144 games with the Royals over the past two seasons.
