Rich Hill, the MLB’s oldest active player, could be eyeing a reunion with the Boston Red Sox, something that we’ve certainly said in the past. After all, Hill has had three separate stints with the Red Sox, and just recently arrived at their Spring Training to try and make it four.
Hill is currently a free agent and appeared on a radio broadcast for the team to announce that he’d been thinking about reuniting with his old team if things work out. He said, “I mean, yeah, definitely interested. Especially from the players standpoint.” If he does indeed stick with Boston, it would be just another year in his extended career. He’s pitched in 19 seasons so far, most recently signing a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates back in December of 2022. Since then, he’s been a free agent.
Last season, he was the league’s oldest player. When Nelson Cruz retired, Hill now has a chance at being the only player left in the majors that was born in 1980. Hill is going to be celebrating his 44th birthday this upcoming weekend by the way. And for those that don’t know, he first came into the league with the Chicago Cubs.
Rich Hill Might Be Needed Depth For the Red Sox
Boston doesn’t necessarily need Hill’s services right now, though the depth could be nice for them. Statistically speaking, Hill hasn’t had the best past two years on the mound. In 2022 with the Red Sox, he went 8-7 with a 4.27 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. In 2023, he was 8-14 with a 5.41 ERA. Factoring that in along with his age and you have a tough discussion on whether to sign him or not.
The Red Sox are likely going to be thinking this over in the next few days or weeks. Especially after they witnessed their starting pitcher Lucas Giolito suffer a possible season-ending elbow injury. This leaves them with a need at pitcher, and he’s somebody that the fans might enjoy having on their roster, even if he isn’t nearly as productive as he once was.
