The Boston Red Sox activated outfielder Tyler O’Neill from the 10-day injured list and optioned infielder Nick Sogard to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
O’Neill, 29, was in the starting lineup for Saturday’s game against the host Baltimore Orioles, batting third and playing left field. He spent more than two weeks on the IL with a left leg infection and didn’t go on a rehab assignment before returning.
O’Neill entered Saturday hitting .268 with 22 home runs and 45 RBIs in 80 games with Boston this season. Selected by the Seattle Mariners in the third round of the 2013 draft, he is a .251 hitter with 100 home runs and 262 RBIs over seven seasons (557 games) with the St. Louis Cardinals (2018-23) and Red Sox (2023-present).
Sogard, 26, made his major league debut with Boston on Aug. 2 and has hit .227 (10-for-44) with a double and six RBIs in 12 games. The switch hitter, who has mainly played second base since his debut, was a 2019 12th-round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays.
