The Pittsburgh Pirates placed right-hander Jared Jones on the 15-day injured list on Thursday, one day after he exited a game because of a right lat strain.
In a corresponding move, the Pirates recalled outfielder Joshua Palacios from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Jones, 22, was removed after five innings and 78 pitches during a 5-4, 10-inning victory over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday. He allowed one run, four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
The rookie said afterward that he was not concerned about the injury, but it would have been “really stupid” to keep pitching even though he said he could have if necessary.
Jones is 5-6 with a 3.56 ERA, 27 walks and 98 strikeouts in 91 innings over 16 starts. Pittsburgh selected him in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft.
Palacios, 28, was batting .298 with three home runs and 14 RBIs in 30 games across three minor league levels this season. He hit .239 in 91 games with Pittsburgh in 2023.
