San Diego Padres second baseman Xander Bogaerts had to leave the first game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves in the third inning with an apparent shoulder injury.
Bogaerts dived to his left to stop Ronald Acuna’s grounder from getting through the infield, but he grimaced as he rolled over at the end of the play, favoring his left shoulder. The four-time All-Star walked off the field with the trainer and Padres manager Mike Shildt after a brief examination on the field.
Bogaerts entered the game with a six-game hitting streak and had upped his average to .219. He went 0-for-1 in his only plate appearance before exiting. Bogaerts has four home runs and 23 runs on the season.
He was replaced in the field and lineup by Tyler Wade.
