Oakland Athletics top prospect Jacob Wilson was by MLB Pipeline, expected to make his major league debut in 2025. However, for the second half opener against the Angels, the Athletics made the call to bring Wilson up to the majors after tearing up the minor leagues. Wilson looked great in his short debut, making plays in the field, forcing multiple disengagements from the pitcher while on the basepaths, and went 1-1 with a single in his first at bat. Unfortunately for Wilson and all in attendance, the young shortstop would be taken out of the game in the fourth inning after hobbling around third base to score the Athletics first run.
Wilson looked confident out there in his debut. In the field, he turned a quick double-play in the top half of the third inning, just before he’d leadoff in the bottom half. In his first big league at bat, Wilson went up swinging at the first pitch, fouling it off before swinging at the second pitch and lacing it over the glove of Zach Neto for his first major league hit.
While on the basepaths, Wilson got three disengagements out of Griffin Canning, and was awarded second base. After Max Schuemann got on base with an infield single, Lawrence Butler would come up to the plate. Butler would hit a rocket down the right field line for a triple. While scoring on that play however, Wilson would start hobbling down the third base line, alerting the training staff, coaching staff, and everyone else watching the game. Wilson’s father Jack Wilson could be seen with his hands on top of his head in shock and worry.
The training staff would look at Wilson and his demeanor in the dugout never switched, making it appear he was good to go. However after struggling to run out to his position in the field, he was pulled from the game. Naturally, everyone was disappointed to see Wilson’s debut get cut short, but this was the smartest decision possible.
The injury hasn’t been announced yet but it looks like a possible hamstring injury. Whether it’s serious or not is unknown as previously mentioned, but either way it’s not something to play around with, especially if it’s your top prospect. While only playing a few innings in his debut, Wilson definitely impressed those watching. Hopefully the 22-year old can recover quickly, and get back to the big leagues.
