Five Picks For July, 23rd MLB Slate

New York Mets at New York Yankees

Jose Quintana (4-6) vs. Luis Gil (10-5)

NYY F5 -0.5

The Subway Series makes its way to the Bronx for its 2024 finale, and it seems fitting that one of the picks today comes from this matchup. Luis Gil has been much better since his July 2nd start against the Reds. Gil has gone at least 6.0 innings in his last two starts against the Orioles and Red Sox, totalling 16 strikeouts across those two starts. Quintana has struggled on the road this season, with a 4.79 ERA away from Citi Field and could struggle with today’s lineup full of right handed hitters.

St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates

Lance Lynn (5-4) vs. Paul Skenes (6-0)

Paul Skenes o7.5 Ks

Paul Skenes is set to face the Cardinals lineup for the first time since June 11th. In that start Skenes tallied eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings pitched, giving up five hits. Skenes seems to improve when he makes a second start against the same team, with the only other example being against the Cubs earlier this season. In his second start against Chicago, Skenes went two more innings, and struck out four more batters, while not letting up a single hit. Skenes has gone over this line in every start for the last month, making this prop a great pick for tonight.

Cincinnati Reds at Atlanta Braves

Nick Martinez (3-5) vs. Chris Sale (13-3)

ATL -1.5

The Braves are looking to get back on track with Chris Sale on the mound after losing three straight. What should be a day where a lot of pitchers are coming out of the Cincinnati bullpen, the ever dangerous Braves offense needs to step up. With the spread of -1.5 at plus odds, it’s great value with a veteran like Sale on the mound.

Philadelphia Phillies at Minnesota Twins

Zack Wheeler (10-4) vs. Simeon Woods Richardson (3-1)

PHI -1.5

Coming off of a tough 7-2 loss against the Twins yesterday, Philadelphia has to get back on track and who else to help them with that than their ace Zack Wheeler. Another spread at plus odds, this is again great value for a team that usually covers that spread when they do win as of late. Against Woods Richardson who’s given up at least two to three runs in his last five starts, the spread here’s a solid play.

Chicago White Sox at Texas Rangers

Garrett Crochet (6-6) vs. Jon Gray (4-4)

Garrett Crochet o6.5 Ks

As the trade deadline draws closer and closer, every start from Garrett Crochet is going to be analyzed under a microscope. Him putting together great outings should only benefit the White Sox further into the trade deadline, and with a great start tonight, his value could rise even more. In what could potentially be his final start with the White Sox, Crochet could very well go out on a high note, with a bunch of strikeouts.
