The Arizona Diamondbacks placed left-hander Jordan Montgomery on the 15-day injured list and reinstated catcher Gabriel Moreno from the IL during a series of moves Tuesday ahead of a three-game road series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Diamondbacks also reinstated outfielder Alek Thomas from the injured list and recalled right-hander Gavin Hollowell from Triple-A Reno. Infielder Blaze Alexander was optioned to Reno, while catcher Tucker Barnhart was designated for assignment.
Montgomery, 31, landed on the IL retroactive to Saturday with right knee inflammation. He lasted just 2 2/3 innings during his start against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday when he gave up eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits. In his eighth season and first in Arizona, Montgomery is 6-5 with a 6.44 ERA in 13 starts.
Moreno, 24, hasn’t played since June 21 because of a sprained left thumb. He was batting .230 with three home runs and 26 RBIs in 61 games for the D-backs.
Thomas, 24, has missed all but four games this season because of a strained left hamstring. He had three hits in 14 March at-bats.
Hollowell, 26, has not made an appearance in the major leagues this season. He is 2-2 with a 6.20 ERA in 32 relief appearances for the Colorado Rockies over the past two seasons.
Alexander, 25, made his major league debut on March 28 and was batting .259 with three home runs and 21 RBIs in 58 games. Barnhart, 33, is an 11-year veteran and was batting .173 with six RBIs in 31 games this season.
