Corbin Carroll smacked two homers and drove in a career-high six runs and Jose Herrera reached base four times on three hits and a walk to help the Arizona Diamondbacks notch an 12-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday night at Phoenix.
Yilber Diaz (1-0) made his second major league start and gave up one run and four hits over six innings for the second consecutive time. He struck out two and walked two as Arizona won for the 10th time in the past 14 games.
Eugenio Suarez added a two-run homer for the Diamondbacks and Ketel Marte also reached base four times (two hits, two walks). Carroll, Suarez, Joc Pederson and Christian Walker also had two hits apiece for Arizona, which racked up 15 overall.
Spencer Horwitz had two hits for the Blue Jays, who lost for the eighth time in the past 13 contests. Alejandro Kirk drove in the lone Toronto run.
Jose Berrios (8-7) allowed five runs and seven hits in four innings for the Blue Jays. He walked four and struck out none.
The Diamondbacks turned the game into a rout in the seventh on Carroll’s three-run homer.
Alek Thomas reached on Vladimir Guerrero’s one-out error and Herrera followed with a single to put runners on the corners.
Carroll then saw a 1-1 cutter from Zach Pop and took it the opposite way and cleared the wall in left to make it 8-1.
Arizona poured it on in the eighth against Toronto’s Nate Pearson. Geraldo Perdomo walked with one out and Suarez followed with a 435-foot blast to left center. It was his fourth homer in the past seven games and 10th of the season.
Thomas followed with a single. One out later, Carroll swatted a drive that barely cleared the fence in right center to make it an 11-run margin. It was just the fifth homer of the season for last year’s National League Rookie of the Year.
Arizona pushed across two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead.
Perdomo walked and Suarez singled to start the inning. One out later, Herrera singled in Perdomo with Suarez advancing to third. Carroll followed with a sacrifice fly to score Suarez.
In the fourth, Herrera singled with one out and Carroll walked before Marte delivered a single to score Herrera. The bases were loaded with two out when Lourdes Gurriel Jr. reached on an infield single to score Carroll.
Arizona scored in the first when Marte walked with one out and scored on Pederson’s double.
Toronto tied the score in the second when Daulton Varsho hit a one-out triple and scored on Kirk’s sacrifice fly.
