Jake Bauers delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the eighth as the host Milwaukee Brewers overcame an eight-run deficit to earn a stunning 10-9 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon.
Milwaukee (89-67) trailed 8-0 after Arizona struck for a seven-run third that featured back-to-back homers by Josh Bell and Eugenio Suarez and a two-run single from Jake McCarthy. Bell hit a two-run blast, while Suarez had a solo shot.
But the Brewers slowly came all the way back, completing the shocking rally with a four-run eighth.
With two outs, Garrett Mitchell shot an RBI single to left before Rhys Hoskins brought home two more runs with a base hit of his own to tie the game at 9. Willy Adames followed with a double before Bauers provided Milwaukee with its first lead of the contest.
Randal Grichuk had put the Diamondbacks (87-69) up 9-6 with a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth.
Jared Koenig (9-4) got the win with one inning of relief. Devin Williams worked around a walk in the ninth for his 13th save of the year.
Justin Martinez (5-6), who served up Bauers’ go-ahead RBI single, took the loss.
After Arizona’s seven-run outburst, Blake Perkins got the Brewers on the board with an RBI single in the home half of the third. An inning later, Sal Frelick’s RBI double and Joey Ortiz’s sacrifice fly cut Milwaukee’s deficit to 8-3.
Jackson Chourio continued the Brewers’ comeback with a run-scoring single in the sixth. Consecutive RBI doubles from Hoskins and Adames pulled the hosts within 8-6 in the seventh.
Milwaukee finished 9-for-18 with runners in scoring position.
After Pavin Smith struck out to open the game, Ketel Marte quickly put the Diamondbacks up 1-0 with his 35th homer of the season.
Brewers starter Frankie Montas was tagged for eight runs (seven earned) and six hits in 2 2/3 innings. He walked two and fanned four.
Arizona starter Jordan Montgomery gave up three runs on six hits in 4 1/3 frames. He walked two and struck out six.
Adames finished with a game-high three hits. Milwaukee outhit the Diamondbacks 16-9.
