Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 8/6 – Assiniboia Downs Race 5
Last night was the Manitoba Derby, and tonight we stay north of the border for today’s QPW as Assiniboia Downs has another big race for tonight as they have the Manitoba Oaks going one mile. Eight fillies are entered for tonight’s race which will go to the post at approximately 10:15 pm Eastern time.
Assiniboia Downs Race 5 – Manitoba Oaks
Favored in tonight’s race is the 6 Zorina (2/1 morning line) who just missed in the Jack Hardy last time out. She closed well but was outkicked at the end of the seven-and-a-half-furlong race. She will be sitting a few lengths off the lead looking to pounce when they head for home.
Things should set up nicely for the favorite here. The 1 Candy Oak (6/1 ML) will take advantage of the rail position and go for the lead. She was last seen on the turf at Lone Star Park where she faded in an optional claimer. She could return to form back on the dirt, but there are others that could go with her on the lead.
The 4 Commandoslastdance (15/1 ML) could be close to the lead if not on it. She won the R.C. Anderson last time at this distance at Assiniboia, but she only had to defeat three other fillies that night two weeks ago. But she has some versatility in her game having won off the pace in the past.
The 5 She’s My Niece (5/2 ML) was up front and dueling last time out but could not hold off the hard charging Zorina and the 3 Midnight Lady (4/1 ML) in the stretch.
Midnight Lady could be another filly that would benefit from a very past pace here. She won the Jack Hardy last time at Assiniboia and could repeat that effort tonight. This may be a filly that found the right group of fillies that she can excel against, as she hit and miss in her races in America at Remington, Sam Houston, Foner and Lone Star Park.
The 7 Dynamic Strike (12/1 ML) should be on the front end as well but last year at Woodbine, she did show that she can rate. It will be interesting to see where she is at athe start of the race tonight.
The 2 Antifreeze (10/1 ML) could be a dangerous outsider here. She was claimed last month at Lone Star Park. I’m not sure se can get the mile distance, but she should be off the pace as well.
I think tonight’s race will be a bit of a replay from the Jack Hardy three weeks ago. There will be speed on the front end, and I think that we are going to see Midnight Lady and Zorina closing. Once again, I think Midnight Lady gets the best of Zorina tonight. I think Antifreeze could surprise as well. I’ll call this 3-6-2-5 and my play is $20 to win on the 3.
