Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 10/8 – Finger Lakes Race 6

Yesterday we featured the juvenile fillies at Finger Lakes. Today, it is the boys’ turn as we have maiden juveniles going six furlongs in the sixth race.

Finger Lakes Race 6

Favored in today’s race is the 8 Carcone (3/1 morning line). He is a first time starter who has been training up for his debut Belmont’s training track. Trainer Melanie Giddings’ stats with first time starters and two-year-olds are not good. She wins at 8% and 7% respectively. But when you dig into the small sample size of the sire Battalion Runner, his offspring so far have won five of ten races as first-time starters so far.

Finger Lakes

There are some mixed signals here with some of the stats here, but they are bringing him to Finger Lakes for a reason. Looks like this gelding will be a sprinter in the future.

The 5 Giant Impact (4/1 ML) had issues in his debut. He stumbled at the start of the race, and then he was boxed and blocked in at the quarter pole. But the time he had room to make a move in the stretch, he tired. He should improve with that first race under his belt.

The 12 Notfanutin (5/1 ML) shortens back to a sprint today for his first race on actual dirt. His last three races were on the synthetic at Presque Isle Downs. He showed that he can close there and should be closing here as well.

The 3 It’s Not Over Yet (8/1 ML) regressed in his last two starts. He showed little at Finger Lakes last time out and in August at Presque Isle Downs. He adds blinkers today in hopes of improving his chances today.

Joe’s Pick

I like the prospects of the 12 Notfanutin shortening up here in his dirt debut. He should like the opportunity to return to a sprint here today. He will get up late over the 5 Giant Impact. I’ll go 12-5-3-8 and my play is $20 to win on the 12. Best of luck everyone!
