Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 1/7 – Parx Race 8

After snow hit the Philadelphia region on Monday, it appears that Parx will be running this afternoon.  Winter racing can be tough, and this winter looks like it could be a winter with many cancellations due to track conditions and snow. As I write this, I can hear the wind blowing, which may not be a good sign since that was the reason why Parx cancelled on New Year’s Day after five races.

But we are going to move forward and look at today’s race, which is the eighth race on an eleven race card at Parx. Like I planned to mention on yesterday’s Parx article before the races were cancelled, I will try to handicap an additional race if I can since Parx is an early track. But note that I may not be able to get another article up to replace any cancelled races because of my work hours.

Parx Race 8 – $5000 claiming

In today’s race, we have a field of ten going six and a half furlongs. These are horses that have not won two races in the last six months.

Favored in today’s race is the 3 Kate’s Golden Dude (8/5 morning line). He comes into today’s after taking a trip down to Laurel to run in an optional claiming race. At Laurel he had the lead and could not hold on in the stretch and finished third but was moved up to second when the winner was disqualified for interference.

Kate’s Golden Dude will be near the lead and try to hold on like he did two races back at Parx winning a $7500 claiming race.

The 10 Notable Bob (3/1 ML) draws the outside today. He is a horse that will try to close here. He did have two good closing efforts here at Parx in November before finishing fourth last month in a race that did not look that bad on paper.

The 6 Jebologist (10/1 ML) may soften up the favorite on the front end here today. He is a gelding that consistently goes for the lead. The problem is that he always tired in the stretch.

The 2 Sal N Louie (9/2 ML) returns after a three-month break. This gelding ran well in September, winning at Delaware Park in his most recent race going a mile, and just missing at Parx. If he is ready to go here today, he will probably stalk but he has shown to close on occasion as well.

Joe’s Pick

I am thinking here that although Kate’s Golden Dude has a great chance to win, he could get softened up with a speed duel. If Jebologist goes for the lead with the favorite, we could get the closers involved.

I’ll take a chance that this happens, and Notable Bob will get up in the final strides of this race. Let’s call is 10-2-3-6 and my play is $20 to win on the 10. Best of luck everyone and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
