Quills Picks Winners – Saratoga Race 4 – NY Stallion Series

We stay at Saratoga after yesterday’s winning selection and we will look at another New York Stallion Series race, and today’s race is a three-year-old race for the boys as this is the Cab Calloway Division of the New York Stallion Series. We have a field of seven running one mile on the turf.

Before I get to today’s race, I do want to say that if this race goes off the turf like yesterday’s QPW race, I may substitute this race. With the seven colts and geldings in this race, I could foresee a few of these horses being scratched. It would not be fair to my readers to bet on a three-horse field. Keep an eye on my X (@JoeQuills) in the event this race is off the turf.

Saratoga Race 4 – New York Stallion Series (Cab Calloway Division)

The 5 The Big Torpedo (4/5 ML) is the heavy favorite in this race if this stays on the turf here at Saratoga. He just missed two back at Aqueduct at the end of April but did come back to win a New York Stallion Series race going six furlongs last month. I think the connections will want to run this colt on the turf, but he has the ability to contend and win on the dirt as well. He will be dangerous on either surface today.

The 6 Cable Ready (8/1 ML) has head issues at the start in each of his four races so far in 2024. He defeated state breds going longer three back in his turf debut. He contended as well in the Grade 2 Pennine Ridge two back an then threw in a major clunker last time out at Aqueduct. He goes back to a restricted field of three-year-olds here and could be a colt that could win this at big odds.

The 4 Fidelightcayut (7/2 ML) couldn’t keep up with the favorite in the last race last month. He might be dueling on the front end with the 2 Courtly Banker (6/1 ML) who finished second in this common race.

The 1 Six Fortyfive (8/1 ML) could be a couple of lengths off the lead here. There was a drastic difference in his debut on turf and his 2024 debut last month breaking his maiden while not showing much in two dirt sprints. There is always the possibility that this gelding could improve more in his second attempt on the turf today at Saratoga.

This is tough because I sense when I started writing this that this race could be taken off the turf. Remember, restricted races like this and state-bred races are not graded because they are not open to all participants. The only restrictions allowed in graded stakes racing is age and gender. So there is a possibility that we see these horses having to run again on the dirt like the Statue of Liberty Division of the New York Stallion Series did yesterday.

The Big Torpedo is going to be very tough here on either surface. He just missed against open company in the Woodhaven two back. He won going six furlongs last out. I don’t think we can call him a turf sprinter yet, but it is going to be very tough to eat him today.

But I think Cable Ready could pull off the upset at the Graveyard of Champions here at Saratoga. If he gets a clean start, he can upset this field. Ignore that last race. He will be closing like The Big Torpedo and win this at a very nice price. Let’s call this 6-5-1-4 and my play is $20 to win on the 6. Good luck everyone!
