Quills Picks Winners – Monday 12/30 – Parx Race 9

When you have a set of stakes races like Parx has today, you veer away from the norm. That is the case here as instead of going with the default sixth race on the card, we will be taking a look at the ninth race on the card, which is the last of four stakes races on the Monday card.

Today’s race is the Parx Future Stars Stakes, and like the name suggests, we have two-year-olds taking the track for today’s featured race. The field of 10 will go seven furlongs on the main track.

The track will most likely be sloppy today. The rain returned to the Philadelphia area Sunday night after the Eagles destroyed the Dallas Cowboys. Parx also has had troubles with the track over the last week or so as the Bensalem oval has dealt with frozen track conditions after a light snowfall last weekend. We will see how things fare today.

Parx Racing Race 9 – Parx Future Stars Stakes

Favored in today’s race is the 10 Crab Daddy (7/2 morning line). He draws the far outside for this test and will have about half a mile before hitting the turn. This gelding broke his maiden rallied along the rail to win the Pennsylvania Nursery here at Parx last month. He should be able to handle the slop here, and with the rain, being on the outside with a stalking trip might be a better place to run today.

The 8 Alchemism (8/1 ML) loved the slop last time out breaking his maiden here at Parx two weeks ago. He dueled for the lead and drew off handily. We know the track will be wet, and if it is, we can see if this is a gelding that will be someone to move up in the slop in the future.

The 7 Global Steve (4/1 ML) won in his debut last month drawing off impressively against a full field of maidens at first asking. He was along the rail down the backstretch, was able to tip wide on the turn and drew off to win by daylight. He is definitely a contender in this race today.

The 2 Right Wing Runner (5/1 ML) is two for two lifetime after winning last month in the mud here at Parx. He won an optional claiming race drawing off to win by almost three lengths. The post should not matter to him today as he has won from the rail and the outside in two races.

Joe’s Pick

I’m looking at this race knowing when I started writing this that this will be a wet race. This is a race that will benefit those that have run well in sloppy or muddy going so far in these juveniles’ brief racing history.

I’ll take Global Steve to win this today. Though I’m going against my theory I just mentioned. Global Steve has one of the top jockeys and one of the top trainers coming together for this race. It is very possible that he will draw off again today to win fairly easily.

I’ll call this race 7-8-10-2 and my play is $20 to win on the 7. Best of luck everyone and I’ll see you in the winner’s circle!
