We stay in the Great White North and at Assiniboia Downs for today’s QPW, as we will look at their seventh race today, and this race is the Canada Stakes. This is a seven-and-a-half-furlong race for fillies and mares. Also, get the coffee ready, because post time is at 11:05 pm Eastern time tonight.
WIth a track like this that is pretty much isolated, you are going to see the same horses running against each other over and over again like this race here at Assiniboia Downs. All six fillies and mares that ran in the last race in the series, the La Verendrye Stakes, all return for tonight’s race as this race will be longer and this group’s first foray around two for the AsD season.
Assiniboia Downs Race 7 – Canada Stakes
Favored in this race is the 3 Spitten Kitten (2/1 morning line). She is a filly that will go for the lead here. She did just that winning the La Verendrye Stakes last out at Assiniboia Downs. She won at this distance last summer in the Jack Hardy and is a horse that will love the races getting longer and longer.
The 7 Melisandre (4/1 ML) should be not for off the favorite here. She was off the rail last time out and couldn’t beat tonight’s favorite last time out. She has run well at a mile so this distance should be right in her wheelhouse.
The 10 Stormieis Blue (3/1 ML) closed well on the outside but could not get to the winner in the stretch. She is a closer and she does boast a win at Remington Park going two turns in an Oklahoma bred stakes race. if the pace up front is hot she might be flying at the end despite starting on the far outside here.
The 2 Big Stretch (8/1 ML) is second race off of the layoff after a race where she lacked a rally last time out. The added distance and that race will be benefits here.
I’m looking at this race, and I cannot find any other filly or mare who would go for the lead with the favorite here. When I look for speed, I’m looking for a horse that consistently does the same thing. The 6 Damn the Torpedoes (20/1 ML) started to rate and has been closing in her last three races. She could go this distance, but does she go for the lead here? I think she will do what she has done in her last three races as opposed to gunning to the lead like last year.
In the end, lone speed is dangerous and I think that Spitten Kitten will love that the races are getting longer here at Assiniboia Downs. Her sire has its winners going an average of seven furlongs and I could see this horse getting this distance and much longer. The only question is will someone challenge here in the front end, but I don’t see it.
I think this is another night to eat chalk. Like I’ve said a few times in the past, sometimes you have to eat chalk and take the small wins before you can get the larger wins. We’ll play the 3 Spitten Kitten to win this race on the front end. I’ll call this 3-7-6-10 and my play is $20 to win on the 3. Good luck everyone and I’ll catch you tomorrow from The Spa for another Quills Picks Winners.
