Improving the defense has been one of Zach Kittley’s top priorities throughout his recruiting in the transfer portal. He found one of his players at the in-state level, making a solid get for the Owls’ defensive line by landing Chenellson Exume from USF.

Exume announced his commitment to the Owls on Friday evening via X, shortly after entering the portal on Dec. 29. He joins FAU with three years of eligibility remaining.
Exume looks for a new opportunity after being a member of the South Florida Bulls for one season, having been a reserve at a position filled with experienced players while working with the scout team. He played in 18 snaps across three games, retaining his redshirt status, recording one tackle and one quarterback hurry in Week 1 against Bethune-Cookman.
“Aggressive at the point of attack. Quick hands who will benefit at the next level moving to defensive line in firing his hands quickly to prevent offensive linemen in getting their hands on him first,” said recruiting analyst Mike Cusimano of So Flo Bulls.
“Moves well for his size and will not be just another big body on the defensive line. Impressive motor/effort on each play. Upper body strength is noticeable with the potential to be even more impactful using his lower body more frequently.”
A 6-foot-4 athlete, Exume can play in the trenches at a high level. His ability to make blocks against opposing linemen was significant regarding the potential he showcased at Miami Edison High School.
His main role at the time was playing in the offensive line, but did have moments where he was on defense. He did the latter in two games during the 2021 season, making 12 tackles (seven solo), two TFL, and two sacks. On offense, he played at left tackle, helping Miami Edison go 7-5 as they made Florida’s 3A playoffs.
Exume was viewed as a consensus three-star prospect by recruiting outlets coming out of high school. On 247Sports, he has an 85 score as the 124th-best inside lineman in the Class of 2024 and the 169th-best player in the state of Texas.
The Owls recruited his services, as he attended two school camps at FAU in June 2021 and June 2023. He also had multiple offers from teams like Ole Miss, Michigan, Tennessee, West Virginia, Syracuse, Marshall, and Jackson State among other schools before choosing USF in December 2023.
Exume has the ability to prevent his matchups from having the upper hand against him by using size and strength, potentially making him a versatile asset in FAU’s defensive game plan heading into spring camp in preparation for the 2025 campaign.
