Ryan Garcia is hoping to get into the ring with Naoya Inoue, but in the 140-pound division. Garcia recently said that he believes a matchup between them would be “one of the biggest PPVs of all time” and that he sees it happening in the future.
Naoya Inoue Has Been Dominant Across Multiple Divisions
For anybody that might not know who Naoya Inoue is, they recently became just the second boxer in the four-belt era to be undisputed in two separate weight divisions. The only other boxer that’s pulled this off was Terence Crawford. Inoue just knocked out Marlon Tapales to achieve that title and has been slowly working up the divisions as of late. However, there’s no indication that they’re going to continue moving up. Garcia believes that Inoue will do just that though, saying that he thinks this way “because I believe Inoue can become a multiple-weight world champion.”
Garcia continued by saying this on social media, “So I’m thinking, what if one day we fight at 140? I’m talking about the future, and we do it in Japan. That would be huge. Mark my words, if it somehow plays out that way, I think that fight would be one of the PPVs of all time.” Inoue made his debut at 108 pounds, so it would be a drastic increase to face Garcia at his suggested weight class.
Although, this is a boxer that’s won a world title in four separate weight categories and is currently settled down at 122 lbs. Inoue, nicknamed The Monster, already has another fight locked in at his current division, that being against Luis Nery in May.
Ryan Garcia Already Has An Upcoming Opponent
As for Garcia, he just boxed and won an eight-round bout against Oscar Duarte, that came in the form of a knockout. Garcia was competing at 143 pounds, the most that he’s ever weighed in throughout his great career. This fight was a nice bounce back for him though, after suffering the first professional loss of his career a few months before that to Gervonta Davis. Ryan is also looking towards another fight, similar to Inoue.
He’s supposed to be taking on Devin Haney for the WBC super lightweight title in April. They’ve already fought one another six times in the amateurs, with each of them beating the other three times. If they square off again in the next few months, that could be an excellent bout to tune into.
So, as it stands right now, both Garcia and Inoue are looking at their own upcoming opponents. When both of those fights pass by, then fans can begin to speculate if this potential idea can come to fruition. Still, the 20-pound weight difference for Inoue might make this a far-fetched dream for Garcia. Either way, it’ll be a while before we hear more news on this.
