Mike Tyson sent shockwaves throughout the sport of boxing once again when he revealed that he’ll be taking on Jake Paul in a few months. Tyson just announced that he’ll get into the ring with Paul on July 20th over at AT&T Stadium in Texas. It can be seen live from Netflix, but it isn’t currently known if it’s exhibition or professional.
It is worth noting that Tyson would have his work cut out for him. Not because he doesn’t have the talent or the experience, but because he’s only fought once in the past decade. After retiring, his only other appearance was in 2020 for an exhibition fight against Roy Jones. It had eight, two-minute rounds and wound up resulting in a split draw. Aside from that, he’s a generational talent, accumulating a record of 50-6 in his professional career with 44 knockouts. The 57-year-old Tyson is apparently looking to shut down the young influencer in Paul.
Speaking of Paul, he has long been criticized for not boxing actual strong opponents, rather just going for big names who aren’t professional boxers. Lately, he’s actually shown that he can compete against professional boxers, beating Ryan Bourland by first-round TKO in his last fight. Paul has built up a record of 9-1 with six knockouts under his belt. His lone loss came against Tommy Fury, the brother of Tyson Fury back in February 2023. Of course, there will be many that don’t appreciate the fight considering Tyson’s age, though he’s still going to be one of Paul’s toughest matchups that he’s faced in his young boxing career.
Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul Is A Huge Opportunity For Netflix
And for Netflix, this is historic. The streaming platform hasn’t hosted a combat sports event ever before, so this will be a first. When asked about it, the vice president for nonfiction sports Gabe Spitzer said, “Mike Tyson is one of the biggest icons in boxing history and Jake Paul is one of the biggest disruptors in boxing history. Saturday, July 20th will be pure drama in the ring in Texas. We are thrilled to partner with Most Valuable Promotions for this historic event and we can’t wait for these two to face off for fans all across the world on Netflix.”
