It was a walk in the park for Canelo Alvarez on Saturday night at the T-Mobile arena in Vegas.
The undisputed super middleweight champion faced off against the undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo. Alvarez dominated Charlo who seemed to have a simple game plan in the fight. Collect a ginormous paycheck and avoid getting knocked out. I guess Charlo accomplished what he set out to.
Canelo applied constant pressure, threw the bigger punches and out landed his hesitant opponent all night long, winning all but maybe 2 rounds
Charlo jumped up two weight classes to face Canelo but seemed to have no interest in actually walking away with Canelo’s straps. Canelo scored a 7th round knockdown while easily winning nearly every round on all the judge”s scorecards. It was the first fight in the four-belt era between two male undisputed champions.
In the co-main event, Jesus Ramos Jr. (the betting favorite) versus underdog Erickson Lubin. The super welterweight fight had a controversial ending as the fight went to the judges and Lubin came away with the upset unanimous decision victory despite landing only 92 punches to Ramos’ 145. Several ringside observers, including Bleacher Brothers AJ Johnson had Ramos winning the fight.
After the fight Charlo called out the Undisputed Welterweight Champion Terence Bud Crawford as the fight he would like next. I have a suspicion that this would be an easy fight for Crawford, I also suspect that Bud would probably elect for a more challenging opponent and a bigger payday then Charlo would provide.
