Although the IndyCar season is a few months away, with testing rapidly approaching for the series, the drivers who are competing in the series are seeing some early on track action, testing in this week’s IMSA sanctioned test, running from Wednesday through Saturday.
The test, which was set to feature all four of IMSA’s classes heading into the 2024 season has seen a lot of positives for teams who are set to be on the grid but there have been valuable gains to be made from some of the IndyCar regulars who will be competing in a part-time schedule for next season.
One of them is Romain Grosjean, who will be with Iron Lynx for the upcoming season.
While the team is slated to only run a partial endurance schedule in IMSA for 2024, with plans to also run a partial schedule in WEC, the #63 Iron Lynx GTP saw great speed all week during the team’s two days of testing, with more tests to come in Austin.
Meanwhile, Josef Newgarden, Colton Herta and Marcus Ericsson all got some time this week behind the wheel of their respective GTP car, with Porsche Penske seeing potentially the most time on track among the prototypes.
Although many of the IndyCar drivers will be competing in Hybrids for 2024, similar to what IMSA has in the GTP class, many drivers have said that there isn’t much to translate over from IMSA to IndyCar given how different the car is.
Even if the cars are different, it is still refreshing to see IndyCar talent on track in a different capacity and for them, it is mostly about the same idea, which is to be able to grab wins in some of the biggest endurance races.
With many of the IndyCar drivers who are in IMSA competing in more Endurance/One-Off roles, the idea of drivers grabbing notable data and information on the car to use for the season is still there.
However, the goal for these drivers is to get comfortable in the car and log laps leading up to the 2024 season, something that saw good results from some of the top guys in IndyCar.
