We head to what has been our Monday and Tuesday race place over the last few weeks. When meets start to wind down, many tracks run futurity races to see who the best juvenile horse on the grounds is.
Today is that day, or at least one of them at Finger Lakes. We have three stakes races on the card, and we will take a look at the featured eighth race on the card.
Finger Lakes Race 8 – New York Breeders’ Futurity
Favored in today’s race is the 2 Under Who’s Radar (9/5 morning line). He weakened last time out in the Futurity on the grass at Aqueduct. This colt has won twice but was disqualified at Kentucky Downs two races back.
He goes turf to dirt here to bounce back from that troubled trip last time out. He will probably be setting the fractions like in his first two starts.
The 4 Bold Fortune (4/1 ML) broke his maiden last time out when he was able to get the lead. He faced an overmatched field that day. That winning margin could have been much more because he was “wrapped up” as he approached the finish. It could be interesting to see what happened with the favorite and this gelding today.
The 6 Idyll Gossip (6/1 ML) will take on the boys here in this race. She broke her maiden two races back at Finger Lakes on the front end. She will have to beat the boys from off the pace because I do not think she is fast enough to run on the front end here today.
The 8 Buttah (5/1 ML) will shorten up from a seven-furlong stakes race at Aqueduct last month. He heads up to Finger Lakes today looking to replicate his maiden breaker two races back at Saratoga. That race will be how he should run today as he stalked the pace and drew off in the stretch.
Joe’s Pick
This looks like a race that appears to have a ton of speed on the front end and a bunch of horses that are just race filler. Under Who’s Radar has proven he can run on both turf and dirt so far and has a built-in excuse here.
But I think that we have a horse that can beat the favorite here in the 4 Bold Fortune. He won easily and did not expend energy for the entire race. He will get the job done here at Finger Lakes. I’ll call this 4-2-6-8 and my play is $20 to win on the 4. Best of luck everyone!
