Monday 2/5/24 – Parx Race 6
After last Monday’s diversion to Turf Paradise, our usual Monday race track is back as we head to Parx, and surprise, surprise, we will take a look at the sixth race on the card here. We have nine horses who are four-years-old and up going a mile and 70 yards on the main track. Track conditions should be fine all week at Parx, and it appears there will be no rain for the foreseeable future.
The favorite in this race is the 4 Last Romance (5/2 morning line) who finished going slightly longer at a mile and a sixteenth at this same level. He could be tough to beat here as he will be near the pace or in front.
The 6 Dreaming of Gerry (7/2 ML) drops from 25k claimers to this level today and should fit in perfectly here. He also had traffic trouble on the first turn last time out on New Year’s Day and packed it in. He runs like he did two back, he wins.
The 9 Dust Devil moves up to this level after winning last time out. He should have a similar trip to Last Romance in a race where there is not an obvious front runner (at least to me). The 5 Practical Coach (10/1 ML) appears to be up there near the front as well.
The 2 We Be There appears to be the candidate that will close in this race. He’s moving up from 10k claimers and always has a closing kid in his races. If there’s a meltdown here, he’ll be the winner.
I’m going to say here that Dreaming of Gerry will hold on to win here over a flying We Be There in the sixth race at Parx. I’m calling this 6-2-9-4, and my play is $20 to win on the 6. Good luck everyone and catch you tomorrow with another Quills Picks Winners!

We had a busy day of three-year-old races as Saturday was a big day for horses trying to get into the Kentucky Derby field. Here’s a quick summary:
- Uncle Heavy overcame a huge speed bias at Aqueduct for Parx connections Mychal Sanchez and Butch Reid to win the Grade 3 Withers at Aqueduct barely nosing out El Grande O on the wire. Uncle Heavy’s backers were rewarded with a $20.60 payout, or $103 if you took my advice in Saturday’s article
- Nysos handily defeated an overmatched field of horses in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes but will not be earning points towards the Kentucky Derby since he is a Bob Baffert trainee.
- Hades gave the Holy Bull field a devil of a time as he went gate to wire to win and earn 20 points towards the Derby. Fierceness was a disappointing third as the 1/5 favorite.
- Mystik Dan rode the rail and moved up as the race progressed and blue the field away to win the Southwest Stakes over the sloppy dirt at Oaklawn Park. Mystik Dan was the longest price horse in the four featured races on Saturday, paying $24.80 to win.
