Quills Picks Winners – Wednesday 10/16 – Keeneland Race 7

We head to our October Wednesday stop as we head to Keeneland for today’s featured race. We have horses going a mile and a half on the turf for today’s race. Post time is scheduled for 4:12 pm Eastern time.

Keeneland Race 7

We have a field of 13 horses entered in today’s race, and favored in today’s field is the 12 Better Bet (7/2 morning line). He will be on the outside unless the also eligible #13 Greystone (8/1 ML) draws into the race.

Keeneland

Better Bet finished fourth in his last race at Kentucky Downs which was also today’s distance. He just missed in his April race here at Keeneland and has turned into a marathon turf professional here. He will be closing in this race today.

Directly to the inside of the morning line favorite is the 11 Idratherbeblassed (9/2 ML). He will be closer to the pace and ran well but could not hold off the top two finishers in deep stretch. He may even be on the lead here today with the lack of front end speed here.

The 5 Six Minus has run longer distances with mixed results. He weakened in the Nashville Gold Cup at Kentucky Downs going two and one-sixteenths of a mile that day. Prior to that, he finished second in the John’s Call at Sartoga. He finished second in his April race here at Keeneland and should bounce back from that race last month.

Keeneland

The 3 Goldeneye (10/1 ML) appears to be the speed in this race. He won on the front end last month at Kentucky Downs where he returns to racing on the front end. His base races are on the lead or stalking, so it would make sense to go for the lead in a race without any real speed.

Joe’s Pick

Races like this are when you really need to dig into the program and sometimes look for more information. Goldeneye’s sire Hard Spun has had offspring that win on average of 7.5 furlongs per race. Six Minus’ sire English Channel has a winning distance of 8.1 furlongs per winning offspring which is off the charts.

I think Six Minus did not like the hilly Kentucky Downs course and will love the flatter course here at Keeneland today. He holds off Idratherbelucky and Better Bet here today. I’ll call this race 5-11-12-3, and my play is $20 to win on the 5. Best of luck everyone!
