Tyrann Mathieu knows just as much as anybody how frustrated New Orleans Saints fans have been with quarterback Derek Carr and head coach Dennis Allen. He recently gave a statement backing and praising them, though fans weren’t very convinced with his sentiment behind those words.
Tyrann Mathieu With Interesting Statement
A reporter asked Mathieu if it was “important” to let everybody know that Carr will be the starter under center and Allen will be the team’s head coach. He responded by saying, “Yes. I can’t always pick my family, but I love them and I support them.” He later went on to praise their work ethic, how adversity has helped make everybody stronger, and that he does still believe in them. However, fans started to tune out after the first statement. Hearing the phrase, “I can’t always pick my family but I love them” didn’t instill the confidence in the fanbase that he might have been hoping it would, at least reading the quote as opposed to hearing it.
The Fandom Needs Hope Again
While it is disappointing that fans have had such little faith in that tandem, it isn’t surprising. Derek Carr didn’t exactly jump-start the Saints offense last season in the middle of another lost season, and head coach Dennis Allen hasn’t done much at all to show why he deserves to be in charge. After all, many fans weren’t happy with how he called out Jameis Winston and the rest of the team for changing his play call and getting Jamaal Williams a touchdown in a blowout win over the Atlanta Falcons in the season finale. The simple fact that the veterans took it upon themselves to change their coach’s play call and go against his plan showed a clear lack of respect toward them. Even in my eyes, it was surprising to see them bring him back with such confidence.
Still, we have a long season ahead of us in New Orleans. Hopefully, the team sticks together and finds a way to win a division that is up for grabs. It won’t be easy with this tough schedule early on, but there is more than enough talent across the Saints roster to make some magic happen and overperform. There is no better time to show up than when everybody starts to count you out. That’s the situation that New Orleans is in right now.
