We head south for the day today as we head to Louisiana Downs for their finale today. Today’s race is a maiden claiming race for fillies and mares going seven furlongs on the main track. The approximate post time this evening for today’s QPW is for 7:35 pm Eastern time.
Favored in today’s race is the 1 Mrs. Macomber (2/1 morning line) who returns to the dirt after three races on the turf here at Louisiana Downs. When you look at the dirt races, those are all terrible. Arguments could be made that some of those races in 2023 were at Oaklawn, but never hitting the board in 13 tries could make this a bad favorite here.
The 6 Short Stack (5/2 ML) was no match for the top two finishers last time out at Louisiana Downs, but in my opinion is a mare here would be more deserving of favoritism if you had to choose between the 1 and the 6. She will be close to the pace and ready to pounce in the stretch.
The 4 Uno Pea (7/2 ML) was three lengths behind Short Stack last month at Louisiana Downs. That was Uno Pea’s debut, and I am expecting improvement with that initial race under her belt.
The 2 Honduras Passion (6/1 ML) was close in her last two races at Louisiana Downs, rallying well at the beginning of July two back despite traffic trouble down the backstretch and then finished well tipping out in the stretch only to lose by a length and a half. She goes up a level on the maiden claiming ladder today, but she looks like a nice longshot play here that ends up getting bet down.
I admit, this race is not a great race. But this is a race that does have some options for you. I went away from Saratoga today because rain was in the forecast. But what Louisiana Downs gives up here in talent makes up for it in an opportunity for a nice win wager winner.
I will go with Honduras Passion here. I can’t bet a horse that has never been in the top three in 13 races. Sometimes you accidentally hit the board. My pick has been consistent in her last three races, and I will go with here and hope I can get close to the 6/1 morning line odds, though I know it won’t happen.
I think Uno Pea reverses the tables on Short Stack while Mrs. Macomber finishes fourth. Let’s call this 2-6-4-1 and my play is $20 to win on the 2. Best of luck everyone!
