Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning has a rib injury and will miss some time, coach Zac Taylor said Tuesday.
Browning, the first backup to starter Joe Burrow, watched practice. Punter Brad Robbins left practice early in what he said was a hip flexor injury.
Star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase did not attend practice in what Taylor said was a day-to-day situation and did not add more information. Chase, who is holding out in a contract dispute, has not practiced since training camp opened but had been in attendance until Tuesday.
Browning, 28, was 10 of 18 for 52 yards passing and one interception and rushed twice for 5 yards in the Bengals’ preseason opener, a 17-14 loss on Saturday to the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He re-signed as a free agent with the Bengals in April on a two-year contract.
Undrafted out of Washington in 2019, Browning spent 2019-21 on the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad. He then spent time on Cincinnati’s practice squad before filling in for the injured Burrow last season and going 4-3 as the starter.
Browning completed 171 of 243 passes (70.4 percent) for 1,936 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions in nine games (seven starts). He also rushed 27 times for 127 yards and three scores.
