Ketel Marte hit two homers Sunday afternoon, including the go-ahead two-run shot in the ninth inning, as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the host New York Mets 5-4 to salvage a split of the four-game series.
The Diamondbacks won the last two games of the series following a five-game losing streak. The Mets fell to 0-6-1 in their last seven series since sweeping a rain-shortened two-game set from the St. Louis Cardinals on May 6-7.
Marte led off the game by homering against Jose Quintana, who gave up a one-out homer in the first to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and a RBI groundout to Kevin Newman in the second before the Mets scored four times in the third against Brandon Pfaadt.
Quintana and a trio of Mets relievers limited the Diamondbacks to three hits between the third and eighth before Arizona stormed back against Jake Diekman (1-2) in the ninth. Gabriel Moreno led off with a pinch-hit double before Marte homered on to the black beyond the fence in left-center field.
It was the first multi-homer game of the season for Marte and the seventh of his career. He reached base in all five plate appearances Sunday, as he was hit by a pitch in the second and walked in the fourth before doubling in the sixth.
The rally made a winner of Justin Martinez (2-0), who threw two perfect innings. Paul Sewald earned his fifth save with a 1-2-3 ninth
Pfaadt gave up the four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings.
Pete Alonso opened the scoring for the Mets in the third with a run-scoring single immediately before Brandon Nimmo and J.D. Martinez laced the game-tying and go-ahead RBI triples in back-to-back fashion.
The Mets had just two triples all season entering Sunday. The consecutive triples were the first for New York since Sept. 19, 2022, when Nimmo and Francisco Lindor tripled against the Milwaukee Brewers’ Corbin Burnes.
Quintana allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four over four innings.
