Bryce Harper hit a solo home run and double, Ranger Suarez improved to 9-0 with seven strong innings and the host Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Texas Rangers 5-2 on Tuesday.
Alec Bohm, Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto each had two hits as the Phillies won their fourth in a row. Bohm drove in two runs.
Suarez allowed one run on five hits and tied his career high with 10 strikeouts.
Phillies closer Jose Alvarado threw a scoreless ninth inning for his ninth save. Alvarado struck out Corey Seager with runners on first and third to end the game.
Seager hit a solo home run while Derek Hill and Jonah Heim added two hits apiece for the Rangers. Marcus Semien contributed an RBI double.
Rangers starter Jon Gray (2-2) gave up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks in five innings.
The Rangers’ Nathaniel Lowe singled to begin the seventh inning, but Josh Smith grounded into a 4-6-3 double play as part of his 0-for-4 night.
In the eighth, Semien grounded out to third and Seager followed with a solo homer to right off Jeff Hoffman to close within 3-2. It was the first earned run allowed by Hoffman since April 8.
Lowe lined out to left with runners on first and second to end a further scoring threat in the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, Bohm had an RBI single, and Bryson Stott added a sacrifice fly for a 5-2 advantage.
Hill singled to open the third inning for the Rangers’ first hit and then proceeded to steal second base. One out later, Semien blooped an RBI double to left field for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Schwarber ripped an RBI single to right to even the score.
Harper doubled to begin the fourth and scored when Bohm hit an RBI single for a 2-1 advantage.
Realmuto appeared to produce an RBI single in the fifth, but Rangers left fielder Ezequiel Duran threw out Brandon Marsh at home to end the inning.
Harper launched a solo homer to center off Jacob Latz for a 3-1 lead in the sixth.
