NCAA Baseball Recap: FAU 9 – FGCU 6
After a tough weekend series against UAB, FAU looked to continue to tally wins before heading to Houston this weekend for a conference series against Rice. After a shaky start in the field for FAU, they would settle in nicely both defensively and at the plate to secure a midweek win over the Eagles. They now hold a 17-16 record over Florida Gulf Coast all-time, and look to rise in the AAC standings after their series this weekend.
FAU’s defense started out shaky with a couple of errors in the infield that allowed a run to come across for Florida Gulf Coast. The Owls would get that run back in the bottom half of the first, after Jalen DeBose was able to score on a passed ball. FAU would open the scoring up more in the fourth and fifth innings, where they scored a combined five runs.
The fourth inning would feature another run coming across due to a passed ball, as Christian Adams scored for the go ahead run. An RBI single from Emilio Gonzalez scored Carter Brady to make it a 3-1 game, and that would be all that would come in the fourth inning for the FAU offense.
While Florida Gulf Coast would get a run back Charles Davalan home run in the fifth, the Owls would respond back with three runs of their own. After Patrick Ward got into a run-down trying to steal second in a first and third scenario, Carter Brady was able to score in the process. An RBI double from Brando Leroux and an RBI single from Spencer Rich gave the Owls a 6-2 lead.
The Eagles would fight back late in the game however, and in the eighth inning tallied four runs, tying the score at 6-6. In the bottom half of the inning however, Daulton Frank and John Schroeder would go back to back with two deep home runs to give FAU some insurance and an 8-6 lead. The Owls would plate one more run in the eighth as Christian Adams came around to score again on a fielder’s choice to make the score 9-6.
Danny Trehey would come back in for the final inning of work in the ninth. Trehey worked a scoreless final frame, and helped the Owls secure the 9-6 win over the Eagles. The Owls now advance to 24-22 on the season, two games over .500 before heading back into AAC conference play this weekend.
