Emmanuel Rivera had two hits and scored twice and the host Miami Marlins beat the Colorado Rockies 4-1 on Wednesday night to win consecutive games for the first time this season.
Roddery Munoz (1-0) tossed six strong innings to earn his first major league victory and Anthony Maldonado got the final three outs of the contest for his first save of the season for the Marlins.
Elias Diaz had the only RBI for Colorado, which has yet to put together a winning streak this season. The Rockies have trailed in each of their first 30 games of the campaign, a feat no team has ever accomplished before in league history.
The game was scoreless until Miami struck for two runs in the fifth inning. Colorado starter Dakota Hudson hit Rivera with a pitch to open the frame, and Rivera went to second on a groundout. After Hudson got Christian Bethancourt to fly out to center, Luis Arraez singled to bring home Rivera for the first run.
Bryan De La Cruz doubled to left to drive in Arraez and make it 2-0.
Hudson (0-5) left the game after giving up a two-out single to Rivera in the sixth inning. He allowed two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings and is still looking for his first win with his new team.
The Rockies got a run back in the top of the sixth inning. Brenton Doyle reached base on a one-out walk, Ryan McMahon doubled to put runners on second and third and Doyle scored on Diaz’s groundout to third.
That was all Colorado could manage off Munoz, who struck out seven and gave up just three hits in his second major league start. Munoz made his big-league debut against the Chicago Cubs on April 20, when he allowed two runs in five-plus innings.
Miami padded its lead in the eighth against Colorado’s bullpen. Josh Bell led off with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Otto Lopez, who later stole second. Rivera and Vidal Brujan walked to load the bases, and Lopez and Rivera scored on Dane Myers’ single to right.
