The Boston Red Sox placed first baseman Triston Casas on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left rib strain.
Catcher Tyler Heineman was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to take the roster spot of Casas.
Casas exited Saturday’s game versus the Pittsburgh Pirates after his first at-bat with what the team called “left rib discomfort.”
“There was a swing in the first at-bat where he kind of like stretched out,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “He came in and said, ‘I can play defense but you need somebody to hit for me in the next at-bat.’ And I was like no. So they’re checking on him.”
Casas, 24, is batting .244 with six homers and 10 RBIs in 22 games this season.
He is hitting .252 with 35 homers and 87 RBIs in 181 career games with the Red Sox.
Boston selected Casas in the first round (26th overall) in the 2018 MLB Draft out of American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla.
Heineman, 32, is batting .259 with two RBIs in nine games in Worcester.
