The Tampa Bay Rays have matched the 1982 Braves and the 1987 Brewers for the longest winning streak to start a season in Major League Baseball. Only one team has won more games in a row at the start of a season. The 1884 St. Louis Maroons went 20-0 before dropping their first game.
Half way through Thursday’s game, the Rays were losing. Down 2 runs to the Red Sox, the Rays did what the Rays have been doing all season, they didn’t panic. There was no reason to be concerned as they have been finding ways to win for two weeks now.
These Rays don’t panic.
Three innings and 8 runs later, Tampa Bay was on their way to a 13th consecutive victory. The Rays’ fifth-inning 7 run pounding of the Red Sox sent them into the history books before a large Tropicana Field crowd of 21,175.
This group of players now have the longest winning streak in Rays history, passing the 2004 Devil Rays who won 12 in row. The Rays have outscored their opponents 101-30 (71 runs), the third-largest run differential in Major League history through the first 13 games of the season.
“To go on a run like this, everything’s got to be clicking, and you’ve got to get contributions from all parts of your roster,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said.
